I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Backbone One, a $ 100 gaming controller for iPhone only. It is often mentioned for its low latency and no comfort and its overall comfort, making it easier and more fun to play games on your phone. This popular peripheral is now gaining support for more devices so Backbone One’s Popular Gaming Controller Now Supports Android, users like me can finally try it out. But this is still clearly an iPhone-only device.
Backbone Plus announced a subscription series called Backbone Plus. It costs about $ 50 a year, or $ 4.17 / month billed annually, and unlocks many features, including a new high-resolution gameplay recording capability and Twitch-key streaming via the Backbone mobile app . The subscription allows you to use the Bone One controller with other devices, including Android phones.
However, instead of making a controller that works with the USB-C port on almost all Android phones, a Lightning-to-USB cable is required to operate the Backbone One. The effect of a console size controller is attached to a tiny TV screen when it is all set up.
Technically, that means the Backbone One is still the only iPhone. The controller is designed for use with the iPhone in landscape mode. It has a Lightning port exposed on the right, which is a proprietary connector that only works with Apple mobile devices. So you can technically connect the Backbone One to an Android phone, but you can’t slide your phone into the controller the way you can with an iPhone, and you have to pay extra for the privilege.
Android users would be better off getting any Bluet00th connected 8BitDo controller available to play this way. There’s also the cheaper Razer Kishi controller, which offers a USB-C version and works similar to the Backbone One, rocking the device to achieve the same portable Nintendo Switch-like look.
If you already have a Backbone One, you can use the mobile companion app to play on a device other than your iPhone, such as a MacBook or iPad, although you’ll need to subscribe to Backbone Plus to get the capacity.
If you were already a Backbone user and had an account before today, you will receive a free lifetime subscription to Backbone Plus. All new Backbone One users will also receive a free first year subscription.
